Hey Pencilore fans, today we will be reviewing Cressida Cowell’s second novel in her bestselling series of books – How to be a Pirate. So let’s get on with this review:
The plot of this book is mildly interesting but at times it can grind to a halt, such as pages 20-60. This is why actually reading this novel got a little dreary at times. However, past page 110, the plot starts to finally get exciting with plot twists, dramatic events and a horrifying dragon sealing the deal. Another feature about this book is the never-ending comedy. Remember when I mentioned that the book got dreary at times? Well, the comedy is what kept me hooked and was also what prevented me from putting this book down and reviewing another novel. Later in the series, some of those novels lack laughter and promote such seriousness which essentially suck out the pleasure of actually reading the book. Here is a summary of how neglected Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, the main character feels after being subjected to a Pirate Training program:
‘Thor only knows,’ yelled Gobber,’how you useless lot got initiated into the tribe of the HAIRY HOOLIGANS…But you now face four tough years on the Pirate Training Programme before you can truly call yourselves VIKINGS,’
‘Oh great,’ thought Hiccup gloomily.
Filled with fun characters, wonderfully written comedy, and well-thought plot, Cressida Cowell has exercised her magic fingertips in writing yet another splendid novel to amuse, intrigue, and mystify budding readers.
Age recommendations: 7-12 yrs.
